/\
::
Jenny by a snowy creek, snowball at the ready...

Last Thursday, left Pasadena at 2:30am, Mario driving thru the early morning hours, the rest of us sleeping. Ate Mcbreakfasts, then hit the slopes at 9:30. The very first run sucked, I was so rusty, and my foot cramped up midway. But after that, I warmed up quick. LAST RUN BEFORE LUNCH, is apparently bad luck to say. Jenny took a spill and got a minor case of whiplash. Snowboarded til about 12, filled our gas tanks with chili cheese fries, luna bars and gatorade. Wind and snow started up fierce so we called it quits at 2. We got snowed in Saturday, 18 inches, so no boarding unfortunately. Watched dirty jobs on the discovery channel, read Johnny Cash's autobiography, and watched the Kings whoop the Predators. Played board games and guitar hero 2 with the cousins, took niece and nephew on a stroll in the early evening snow. Around midnight, after everybody fell asleep, Jenny and I watched the snow falling, fat flakes drifting thru the cone of the streetlight. Peaceful and serene. Perfect. Sunday morning, dug out the cars, cleaned up the condo, ate leftovers, and drove home. Wish we were still there.

It's excerpted from the short story "Printcrime", from his new short story collection Overclocked. Download one and make yer very own mini. It's standard 8.5"x11" so you can make xeroxes, fax copies, dittoes, mimeographs, etc. for you and your friends. I'm 2/3 into Cory's first book, "Down And Out In The Magic Kingdom" and it's rad.

Jacob Covey kicked butt in putting this book together, and you should come check it out.
If I don't make it to this, it's because I'll be at GR2 hanging the phodoborrito show (insert sad face emoticon here). Crossing my fingers that I'll be able to make it though....

RIP Iwao Takamoto

I remember seeing his name after every Scooby-Doo, Superfriends, Jabber-jaw, Snorks, episode (hell, any Hanna-Barbera cartoon from the 70s and onwards) when I was a kid. At the time, I didn’t care whether I saw asian Americans on tv or not, whether it was sitcoms, variety shows, whatever. But this was cartoons, this was different than all the other stuff on tv, and so his name was stamped into my brain. Years later, in animation school, I looked through books for his name and examples of his drawings and character designs. There were a few, but not a whole lot.

Hanna-Barbera has lost a bunch of greats in the last few months: Joe himself, Ed Benedict (genius character designer of the Flintstones), and now Iwao Takamoto.
